Population Growth Rate Formula

Following is the population growth rate formula on how to calculate population growth.

A = P (1 + r/100)^t, where
A = is the final value of the population
P = is the initial population
r = is the annual growth rate
t = is the number of years the population is to grow

How to Calculate Population Growth?

Let's look at an example of how to calculate population growth using the above population growth formula.
Assuming the initial population of a small town is 20,000 people, and it has a population growth rate of 5%, let's find out what the total population is after 30 years.

A = P (1 + r/100)^t
A = 20000 x (1+5/100)^(30)
A = 20000 x (1+0.05)^30
A = 20000 x (1.05)^30
A = 20000 x 4.3219
A = 86,439

Therefore, there will be around 86,439 people in this town after 30 years.

What is population growth?

Population growth is the increase in humans on earth due to reproduction. Different parts and countries of worth have different population growth rates.

Some countries have higher population growth, some have lower rates. Some countries like Japan have negative population growth.

Why is there population growth?

With modern healthcare, the average human lives longer than their ancestors. Therefore, the population growth on earth is accelerating.

As of 2023, there are over 8 billion people on earth. With a 0.9% annual growth rate, it is expected that the earth will have close to 10 billion people by 2050.

Population growth rate in the US

The current population in the US is over 334 million in 2023 with a 0.1% annual growth rate which is lower than the average 0.9% population growth around the world.

Why is population growth important?

Population growth leads to economic growth. Economic growth leads to more tax revenue for the government as companies are producing more products and services.

When population growth is fast in a location, the housing demand will grow which translates into higher housing prices.

There will be more demand in the job market to fulfill the needs of the people and more opportunities.

Also, it is important for the government to know the population growth of a certain state, or city so that they can build infrastructures to support the people.

The downside of population growth is that there will be more competition and pressure. The city will become more dense and there will be a negative impact on the environment.

The cost of living will be higher, and housing will be much more expensive, which is bad news for those who want to buy a house and settle down.
