How to Compare Two Numbers

  • A positive number is always greater than a negative number.
  • For example,
    9 > -8

  • Compare Positive numbers

    • The number with more digits is always greater than the number with fewer digits.
      For example,
      502 is greater than 24, because 502 has 3 digits while 24 has only 2 digits.

    • If the numbers have the same digits, we need to compare from the highest place value first, which starts from the left digit to the right of the number.
      If the left digit is greater, then the number is greater.
      If the left digit is the same, go to the next digit to compare.
    • For example, compare 529 to 525 we compare them from left to right,
      5 = 5
      2 = 2
      9 > 5
      therefore 529 is greater than 525.

  • Compare Negative Numbers

    • The number with more digits is always less than the number with fewer digits.
      For example,
      -502 is less than -24.

    • If the numbers have the same digits, we need to compare from the highest place value first, which starts from the left digit to the right of the number.
      If the left digit is greater, then the number is smaller.
      If the left digit is the same, go to the next digit to compare.
      For example,
      -529 is less than -525.
