Mulch Calculator is used to calculate the mulch you needed to mulch an area. The how much mulch do I need calculator will determine how many bags of mulch do you need, based on the width, length and depth of the area that you planning to mulch. You will also find out the mulch in terms of cubic yards in case you need to buy bulk mulch to save money.

To calculate how much mulch you need, we need to calculate the volume of
mulch usage.
To calculate the volume, first need to calculate the landscaping area, and then multiply it by the
depth. The depth is the thickness of the layer of mulch you desire to use.
The area is calculated based on the shape.
This mulch calculator uses some common shapes such as squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, and trapezoids
for calculation.
For example, if the area is 200 sqft, and the thickness of the layer is 2 inches.
To calculate the cubic feet of mulch needed,
the calculation is:
200 x 2 / 12 = 33.33 cubic feet.
2 / 12 is for converting 2 inches to feet because we need to use the same length unit for calculating.
There are 27 cubic feet in a yard of mulch, or 1 yard = 27 sq ft.
Use the following mulch bag table to determine how much mulch you will need.
Desired depth | 3 cubic foot bag | 2 cubic foot bag | 1 cubic yard |
---|---|---|---|
1" | 36 sq ft | 24 sq ft | 324 sq ft |
2" | 18 sq ft | 12 sq ft | 162 sq ft |
3" | 12 sq ft | 8 sq ft | 108 sq ft |
4" | 9 sq ft | 6 sq ft | 81 sq ft |
Keep in mind that bulk mulch is cheaper but is harder to handle than bagged mulch. Measure the area that you are planing to mulch by width and length in terms of feet. Bulk mulch is measure by cubic yards whereas bagged mulch are measure by cubic feet.
